Children’s Festival

Various events are prepared for children and their family!

These events includes trying on folk wears, traditional games, crafting workshops, demonstration of reeling silk from cocoons, folk story telling, gallery talk for children and etc..

*Please refrain from sketching using chairs or easels, or taking photographs using tripods, as it is expected to be crowded.

  • Dates: May 2 (Saturday) ~ May 6 (Wednesday, national holiday), 2026 * in smaller scale if it rains

Folktales Telling by Mangekyo

  • Date: May 2 (Saturday)
  • Time: 14:00 ~ (about 30 minutes)
  • Capacity: 30 participants (first come, first served)
  • Fee: admission fee only
  • Place: 11. The Sakuda House
  • Storyteller: The Tama Ward Storytelling Group “Ohanashi-Mangekyo”

Workshop of Indigo Dyeing "Snow Flake Patterned Handkerchief"

  • Dates: May 2 (Saturday)
  • Time: 9:50 ~ 11:15, 12:50 ~ 14:45 (it takes about 30 minutes to dye each handkerchief) First come, first served.
  • Place: Traditional Indigo Dyeing Workshop (The West Gate of Minkaen)
  • Everyone can participate (elementary schooler or younger children must be accompanied by 1 guardian)
  • Fee: 1,320 Yen (handkerchief and rubber gloves included)

Carp Streamer-Small Shoulder Bag Decorating Workshop-

  • Date: May 3 (Sunday, national holiday), May 4 (Monday, national holiday)
  • Time: (1)10:00~, (2)11:00~, (3)13:30~, (4)14:30~ *About 40 minutes for each
  • Everyone can participate. However, children under elementary school must be accompanied by 1 guardian.
  • Capacity: 10 participants for each time slot
  • Fee: 800 Yen (Please pay with cash at the venue). *Admission fee to the museum required in addition
  • Admission: starting April 8 (Wednesday). Please refer to the event page written in Japanese for reservation.
  • Place: the 2nd floor of 0. The Hara House

Trying On Folk Wears

  • Dates: May 3 (Sunday, national holiday), May 4 (Monday, national holiday), May 5 (Tuesday, national holiday) 
  • Time: 10:00 ~ 12:00, 13:00 ~ 15:00 * in smaller scale if it rains
  • Fee: Admission fee only
  • Place: 11. the Sakuda House

Sales of Bamboo Crafts and Woven Works by Mingi-kai

  • Dates: May 3 (Sunday, national holiday), May 4 (Monday, national holiday), May 5 (Tuesday, national holiday)  *In smaller scale if rainy
  • Time: 10:00 ~ 14:30
  • In cooperation with: Mingi-kai (Society for Preserving Arts and Skills of Making Folk Tools)
  • Place: Bamboo Works at 13. the Hirose House, Woven works at 1. the Suzuki House

Introduction of the Folk Houses for Children

  • Date: May 4 (Monday, national holiday), May 6 (Wednesday, national holiday)
  • Time: 10:00 ~ (about 20 minutes)
  • Fee: Admission fee only
  • Free to participate on the day
  • Presenter: a curator of our museum
  • Place: 6. The Sasaki House
Traditional Games of the Old Days

Gallery Talk (for children) on the Special Exhibition

  • Time: 10:30 ~ (about 20 minutes)
  • Fee: Admission Fee only
  • Admission: free to participate on the day

  • Place: the exhibition room in the main building

  • Date: May 5 (Tuesday, national holiday)

  • Everyone can participate. However, children under 3rd grade must be accompanied by 1 guardian.
  • Capacity: 10 participants for each time slot
  • Fee: 600 Yen (Pay by cash at the workshop) *Admission fee to our museum required in addition)
  • Admission: Numbered tickets are handed out on the day from 9:30
  • Place: 11. The Sakuda House

Workshop of Washi Paper-making

In this workshop you can experience the process of traditional washi paper-making in an easier way.
  • Date: May 6 (Wednesday, national holiday) * it will not be canceled in light rain
  • Time: (1)10:00~ (2)11:00~ (3)13:00~ (4)14:00~ (5)15:00~ (50 minutes for each time slot)
  • Anybody can participate.* A Child under 3rd grade must be accompanied by 1 guardian
  • Capacity: 6 participants for each time slot
  • Fee: 800 yen (Please pay with cash at the venue) *the admission to Nihon Minkaen required in addition
  • How to participate: Numbered tickets will be handed out from 9:30 on the day at the venue
  • Venue: the yard of 6. The Sasaki House

Craft a Grasshopper with Leaves

  • Date: May 6 (Wednesday, national holiday)
  • Time: 10:00 ~ 12:00, 13:00 ~ 15:00 *will close earlier when materials run out
