Workshop “String Art – Phoenix” on December 13

In this workshop, you can choose from a variety of colored strings, wind them around a grid of nails hammered into a wooden board, to create a geometric pattern.
The theme this time is "phoenix", which evokes the image of new year.
Please be noted that the instructions is given in Japanese. Reservation is required. Please see the page written in Japanese for details.

  • Fee: 3,500 Yen (Participants are exempt from admission fee to Minkaen. Accompanying persons must pay admission fees.)

Folk Tales of Tōno

Folk stories told in the dialect of Tōno, usually held on the second Saturday of even-numbered months.

There are gallery talks for the Children on the special exhibition "Living in Gokayama - 30th Anniversary of the Registration as a World Heritage Site".
Please feel free to join on the spot.

Annual Event Exhibition “Ebisu-co”: December 4 ~ January 20

Ebisu-co is an event to worship Ebisu-sama, one of the seven gods of good fortune in Japan. We reproduce it in the style of the Kitamura family in Hadano City.

Annual Event Exhibition “Preparations for Shogatsu”: December 4 ~ December 23

We exhibit how rice cakes are prepared as an offering to "shogatsu" (the New Year).

Mini-Exhibition at Traditional Indigo Dyeing Workshop – The Stencil Dyed Pattern of Horse, the Zodiac Sign of 2026

The stencil dyeing works by our staff, with patterns of horse, the zodiac sign of the year 2026, are on exhibit.

  • Fee: free (only inside of Traditional Indigo Dyeing Workshop)

Special Exhibition “Yukigakoi (Snow Fence) – the Sugawara House -“

Snow fence, a traditional way of protecting folk houses from heavy snow in snowy regions, is reproduced at the Sugawara House.

  • Date: Sunday, November 16, 2025 ~ Sunday, March 1, 2026
  • *The snow fence is installed on November 15 and 16, 2025, and is removed on March 1, 2026. The schedule may change depending on weather condition.

Special Exhibition “Living in Gokayama – 30th Anniversary of the Registration as a World Heritage Site”: October 1 ~ May 24

Three Gassho-style houses from the Gokayama region of Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture have been relocated to the Minkaen.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the registration of the Gassho-style Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, the home of these three houses, as a World Heritage Site, a special exhibition will be held focusing on the lifestyle and culture of the Gokayama region.

  • Period: October 1 (Wednesday), 2025 ~ May 24 (Sunday), 2026
  • Hours: 9:30 ~ 17:00 (9:30 ~ 16:30 during November to February)
